K-6 Math Success

become a better math teacher!

I'm Jonathan Brendefur, PhD and I've helped thousands of elementary school teachers learn to love and effectively teach math - often it becomes their favorite to teach.

Learning math IS fun! So is teaching it.

Teaching is hard work, especially in elementary classrooms. I know this, having taught kinder through high school. The reality is most teachers don’t love teaching math. Some do, but not all...yet :)

Most of us learned math by memorizing procedures and doing repetitive activities. Teaching the same recycled but fancier looking materials from a few huge companies over the last few decades.

This has led to to a lack of understanding, inability to recall lessons later, lack of connections to math in everyday life, misconceptions, and is a weak foundation for learning.

I've developed the Developing Mathematical Thinking Framework, building on 40+ years of research to focus on the right things and build a strong foundation for math education.

I'm certain it's different than you're used to, and that's good. It' works, you'll see the light bulbs turn on and feel a renewed energy with teaching math.

Before, math was my least favorite subject to teach. Now, it is most definitely my favorite!

"I had kids that were absolutely loving math and wanting to do more or wanting to create their own problems for their friends to solve."

I have taught math in several states now, and I found this to be one of the most innovative in terms of stretching our mathematical thinking in specific, strategic ways to get the most gains from students.

I have never loved teaching math as much as I have this year. Learning all of these teaching strategies from (DMTI) has made math come alive in my classroom. My students are further along now than any class I’ve ever taught before.

If I had been taught math this way I think I would have loved it and actually been a math teacher. I never thought I would say this, but I actually look forward to math.

"My entire 1st grade class was at grade level by the end of the year (had never happened before!)."

I had huge gains. I had one student that gained 250 points over the year (istation). It’s amazing.

I wanted to share my math ISAT percentage with you. 73%! That’s over 20 points higher than last yerar. Woo!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for all the help and guidance.

Please join us here and I'll send you the DMT Framework as well as in-depth content on teaching strategies, early predictors of success, using effective models & language (so students can describe their thinking to you), and more.
